I was at Leopold!
posted by: Jinesh Parekh Nov 26 2009 @ 3:51 pm

To be honest it’s all left behind. It’s a part of my life I really don’t want to recall. But I’m sick and tired of this ’spirit of Mumbai’ and ‘we salute our heroes’ sham I’ve been hearing about and watching the whole day. I do salute all the men who sacrificed their lives but the media is creating content out of nothing. Stop showing those hard-hitting emotional videos and get some real coverage. We want answers. And from the big guys.

Why should I support any of it? I saw people bleed right in front of my eyes. Still can’t remove the image of a young middle aged lady bleeding to death right outside leopold.

Last year I was sitting at Leopold with an old school friend. While I went outside to grap a smoke my friend was sitting inside waiting for the others to catch up. And they started firing. After the firing started it took my friend, Pranav, 5 seconds to get out. Honestly, the longest 5 seconds of my life. Chaos. Commotion. And blood. A combination that made some freeze and the rest run around.
I distinctly remember, as Pranav, got out we were running towards Taj as it seemed like the only good option. Just as we were about to seek shelter in Taj we heard those sounds again. I knew something was wrong and we just left. We hitchhiked a ride. Something. Something. Something. The rest remains blank. All I know is that in my own freakin city, my hub, my place, I had to run for my life. Scary when you’re in that place. Otherwise, it’s just like any other story you’d read about in the papers.

So what now? How do I forget these things?

I still have a few questions:
- What the F was Ram Gopal Varma doing the next day at Taj?
- Why would it take 60 freakin hours to get those mofos killed?
- Qasab. How is he f’in still alive?
- Politicians will always be politicians. But since when did media lose it’s integrity and cover the event like it’s a reality TV show? Hint: Aaj Tak, India TV. Need some news. Cut the crap.
The list goes on. And it needs to be more populated.

It’s been a year. Even now, there are times that I get scared. I couldn’t sleep during Diwali. The crackers would remind me of those sounds. Enough. #ONEYEARON and I don’t get anything? Not even answers?

I know I am one single individual and I can’t do much. I voiced myself and will try my level best to get people to read this.

One last thing: If you have any questions, ask here. I want the entire freakin parliament to read this!

For those who don’t know what exactly happened here it is. No BREAKING NEWS and SANSANI whatever. The unadulterated version of what really happened:

Amidst all of this here’s a video you just shouldn’t ignore.
It’s about time we wake up and ask. “Jaago India! Ab nahi toh kab”?

Look, it’s just a point of view. An opinion. I’m sure some will agree and some won’t. In either case the intention isn’t wrong. I was angry. Writing was the medium. All I want is people to read this. Or if nothing else just watch the two videos.

First you start out saying you were AT Leopold. Then in the course of
the article you say you went out to smoke, I wonder if that meant you
went across the street or you walked a bit to the nearest ”beedi ka
dukaan”?
60 Hours because they fought the terrorists with precision they didn’t
go in like idiots shooting any thing that moved, no civilians were
even hurt in the assault by the NSG.

Qasab is alive cause this is India, not a Banana republic where Jinesh
rules. However serious the crime, the alleged criminal has his right
to be heard.

It was reality, you want the media to cover some fashion show while
the attack occurred? Then you would scream our news channels have no
sensibilities. IndiaTV or for that matter any channel will show
whatever it cares. If you don’t like it? Change the channel? I mean
the remote is in your hands. Its not the ONLY news channel out there.

And seriously you think the parliament is going to read your crappy
post? It doesn’t even make sense. You negate your own statements to
begin with by lying about your location.

Besides the parliament is a law making body not a Justice Pradhan
Committee, I doubt it make even a SMALL difference after reading your
nonsense.
And oh btw, to end this diatribe I would like to see how you would do
things differently, write down your game plan, it seems ALL too easy
to use the F words but is it that easy to run a city ?

I posted this comment earlier but the author I guess couldn’t really answer the questions, so I will post it again and hope its not deleted.

@ Berges: I am sorry your comments were deleted.Your comment was deleted because it was flagged.
I merely blog. And they are my opinions. Some will agree and some won’t.

To start off I’m really glad that none of your friends or family members were hurt in the incident. You seem to have a lot of questions. I’ll be glad to answer these.

- I was at leopold. I was standing at the leosquare exit since they don’t allow smoking inside.

- In those 60 hours civilians were hurt and a lot of them died. In Israel an operation like this wouldn’t take that long.

- Agreed. This is India and that’s the reason he’s still alive. My question: why no speedy trial?

- I should’ve changed the channel. But to which NEWS channel?

- I still want them to read this. As simple as that. You think it’s crappy then don’t ask them to read it. Really, where are we going with this?

- Of course the media should cover it. It’s ’how’ they cover it. Yesterday on Zee Business (in hindi) they a program on ”how cricket is the only that brought back smiles on people’s faces after the attack”

- I don’t have a game plan. I am a citizen who pays taxes. I have a PAN card. I am good at marketing and blogging. That’s what I do. I vote for people who can run this city. When they f#ck up, I write about it. That’s what I do. And it does move people. What’s your bit?

- Again, I know you have issues with me but bringing it out this way is kinda sick. It was a traumatic incident and I know a person of your intelligence could never ever try and step in someone else’ shoes. Make fun of things. Jokes are usually harmless when they’re funny. This wasn’t.

To start off, I have no issues with you, if I did, I definitely wouldn’t bring it out here. I am just commenting on your “blog” because it made no sense to me.
Secondly I see no reason why the comment should have been flagged. I know for a fact it was Deleted.
I did have a relative who died. So let’s clear that out too.

- No such terror attack has occurred in Israel where terrorists stormed a hotel, laid siege to it and there was an ensuing gun battle. So you can’t compare that. Secondly it’s not like you can enter a hotel and just randomly shoot. You do know the terrorists were holed up on higher levels and thus had a tactical advantage over the NSG. They could lob grenades from higher levels of the atrium at the NSG. The gunmen had booby trapped dead bodies. They had lit on fire many parts of the building. They knew the hotel better than the NSG and had a better idea of where to hide and fire from. It’s a precise operation. It’s not like you just run in there and shoot. Also there was no light and a lot of smoke. And again I can assure you in Israel there would be civilian casualties. In the Taj the NSG had no civilian injuries so let alone casualties. Also during the gun battle they had to evacuate guests that were in locked up in rooms.

- There is a speedy trial going on, both sides of the case, the prosecution and the defence have the right to call witnesses, examine evidence and carry out a proper judicial procedure. This is not Afghanistan where some nincompoop gives out a sentence and you are shot dead. This is a legally bound justice system. Justice will be served. It took the Americans 4 years to convict the show bomber. And even more to convict some of the alleged terrorists at Guantanamo.

- There are many channels, like NDTV or even BBC and CNN which had a good reporting style. If you were unhappy with them. Switch off your TV. Like I said nothing was being forced on to you. You could read the news in the next day’s paper.

- Well it wasn’t really the media’s fault. We all want live visuals. Yes they did mess it up a bit. But you can’t blame them; it was the first time such an incident occurred. They have since come up with certain rules. Also all thru the incident the IB was recording the conversations; they knew that live visuals were aiding the terrorists over the phone. No one from the government complained, or even asked the media to stop coverage.

- Stop criticising the government, I think the home minister has done a fair job in improving the security measures. There is a lot to be desired but you cannot improve security over night or even one year.

These are points based on your post which in my opinion is just a silly knee jerk reaction.

@Berges. I am deeply sorry for your loss. May your relative RIP.

- I salute the people who gave their lives for this. I really do. However, I am not happy with the way the whole rescue mission was handled. I mean, the terrorists were watching the news channels. For starters, in any rescue mission, any form of communication channel should be blocked. So who’s to blame for this? Media? Rescue mission experts? Who?

- Yes, such an operation has never occurred anywhere. But isn’t it high time that our intelligence systems should’ve picked this? Did anything happen in the united states after 9/11? Did anything happen in England after the serial train-subway blasts?

- First you say this is India. Things are done in this particular way. Then you compare it with Afghanistan and America. I don’t want my country to be like the others. It’s my India and I want a better judiciary system which ensures a speedy trial. Too much to ask? For all you care, appoint extra people to make it work 7 days a week and 24 hours a day. We still haven’t completely cleared the legal mess from the 93 attacks.

- BBC and CNN aren’t Indian TV channels. I never attacked those. What moves the masses should be unadultered. Media, as we Indians see it today, is completely bought. Journalists are now EMPLOYEES.

- The security has been approved? Try carrying a knife into any mall, railway stations or buses. No body will notice. I don’t see security improving.

This is my last response to your comment. Clearly, we have two separate views and cannot meet on the same page. What you said does makes little sense but you clearly don’t seem to get the intent of this article.
