Just Speak!! was a set of Group Discussions, workshops, seminars which was organized by Mithibai Students on 4th August’09 in association with Liberal Youth Forum right at their campus.
Just Speak aimed at sensitizing the youth by creating Awareness amongst them about issues like, “Are we active citizens?” Or the “Right to Information Act”.
As their first step, they conducted the session with the Management Students. It was a Group Discussion which aimed at not only training the student for their MBA entrance exams and would also creating awareness amongst them.
EXTEMPORE SESSION
There were 12 students selected after Extempore auditions which was judged on various parameters by our soft skills professor Mrs Neelima Kallath.
The topics given to the students were:
•Education system in India,
•Child Actors in TV commercials/soaps, Are they a victim of CHILD LABOUR?
•Are strikes the only tool to solve issues?
MOCK GD
The participants were then provided training on the Do’s and Dont’s of a Group Discussion by Our Business Communication Professor Mrs Usha Subramanian A MOCK GD was conducted tackling issues like, “Should military training be made compulsory in our education system” and “India: A racist country?”.
It was a mind-boggling discussion wherein the students got into some very heated arguments and interesting opinions which came out on these subjects. Finally the wait was for the final event where they could compete for the “Best Speakers award”.
The Final Event
THE FINAL EVENT
In order to make the event more motivating, the organizers had invited Mr. Rakesh Agrawal, the MD of Frankfinn Institute of Airhostess Training. He is a Communication Trainer with an MBA from Boston University.
The organizers were pleased to see 140 students who had come to watch the discussion. The 12 participants were geared up for the GD. The topics given to the participants were in sync with liberal ideas which are the aim of the forum. They were; “Private Sector not Public sector leads to faster growth and development of the Indian Economy” and “Youth of India doesn’t have a Leader to Follow and Look upto”.
It was a 15 min discussion excluding the two minute preparation time. With the time constraints both the group managed to come up with various ideas and arguments amongst each other.
Mr. Agrawal judged the participants according to the IIM judging criteria, he also provided the students with his opinion about the topic and mentioned about his experiences. He also individually gave a feedback to the participants on their communication skills.
Overall it was a very inspiring and a learning experience for the participants as well as the audience. “I have never been in an event more inspiring and learning than this. “said Niraj Zain (from the audience).
The organizers of the event i.e. Yash Maniar, Sagar Panchal, Deblina Roy and Nishit Thakkar were glad that the event ended at a very positive note and turned out to be very successful in fulfilling its aims and criteria.
